Is it when you agree to daily injections, pills and procedures to get you there??

Is it when you let go of everything you imagined pregnancy to be, and start to pray just for 24 weeks??

Is it when you stop blaming god for the challenges that your child faces, and thank him for your child??

Is it getting on a plane and flying half way around the world for a child that has not genetic link to you, but is every bit your child??

Is it when the idea that you may never be a mother brings you to your knees and you can not imagine how you will go on??

Is it when you look in your child's eyes and cannot recall one minute of life before that very second??

I can never remember a time in my life that I did not dream about being someones mother. Every ones journey to motherhood is different. There were many times that the path that I took seemed full of unexpected turns and often had no end in site. The journey and path that I took made me appreciate so much more what was at the end of it.

I thank God often for allowing me to become a mother, but do not often thank the person who taught me how to be a mother. Thank you mom for teaching me love, strength and sacrifice and how to be the best mother by setting the example!!!

When Griffin was born we had been through so much with Mac we wanted everything to be "perfect" with Griffin. We had so much anxiety waiting for every milestone with Mac. Our home was often a revolving door of therapists and days were filled with endless medical appointments and battles with insurance companies. When Mac turned three I could not wait to shut and lock my door and never let another therapist in again.

I never imagined myself a parent to ignore warning signs and imagine tomorrow that my child would start talking, walking, etc. But very early on I did just this with Griffin. I noticed very early on his language, social and motor skills were off. I was often the advocate to other families about getting help early and the benefits of early intervention. Yet I refused for a long time to make that call. I could not imagine having another therapist walk through the door and tell me something was wrong with my child. It really took my pediatrician sitting my down and asking what the hell I was doing to have me make that call. I was dreading the conversation, the evaluation and everything that comes along with a child receiving therapy before three. I did not want to pretend that I was perfectly happy with the situation my family was facing, when really I was up nights wondering what would happen to my child.

Griffin started to receive services soon after my talk with the doctor. I realized I needed to just get over my issues and do what was best for him. Today marked the end of these services, Monday he will become the responsibility of the school department in our town. My heart is broken, yes I am sad that we will no longer receive therapy in our home. What was once a dreaded activity, turned into such a positive one. Griffin has really transformed before our eyes and I will be forever be grateful to the therapist's who I believe made this happen. When I was beat down from having therapist in my home, they made me look forward to these visits. While I once felt my home needed to be spotless, they allowed me not worry. They knew when to push and when to sit back and let things be. When they walked into our home for the first time I was beat down, when they left today I felt sad, but renewed and ready to face what we have ahead of us. When anyone wonders, why do you want to be a nurse, I usually immediately think "to make a difference" The more I experience in the nursing field the more I think how can I make a difference in such a short period of time that is often allowed for patient care. Griffin's therapists came for often only one hour a week and they made a huge difference in all of our lives. This I will never forget.

Amy and Andrea if you read this please know that I can never thank you enough for what you did for Griffin but also for what you did for me. Please do not think it ever went unnoticed.

It is the time of year again that we ask for your support. On April 25th our family will join March of Dimes in their annual Walk!! We have decided that we have been doing this long enough and that everyone knows the statics and scary facts about prematurity. This year we will speak to you from our hearts. Since Mac was born in 2003 we have constantly been reminded how much the March of Dimes has given to our family. The March of Dimes started as an important cause for us and quickly became our passion. We have seen our involvement over the last year transform into our mission. It is the mission of our family that someday every baby will get a fighting chance! This year the March of Dimes recognized our devotion to ending prematurity and birth defects. They have given us the opportunity to represent something even larger then our family’s mission and have asked us to represent the March of Dimes in their mission. We are very pleased to be the 2010 Ambassador Family for the March of Dimes. When something negative happens in someone’s life it is very easy to ask why me? While at an event last week, while standing on stage and telling our story it became very clear “why us”. We have the power to tell our story, raise money and most importantly raise awareness. We believe this is a beginning of a journey for our family. We are not quite sure what god has in store for us in the future but right now we need funds, as Mac likes to say “To Save babies” Please consider helping us fund our mission. I just found a large puddle of juice in the living room, and Griffin standing there with the top in one hand and the bottom in the other. I asked him like I always do never expecting an answer "Was this an accident?" He looked at me as serious as can be with his head tilted to the side like a teenager and stated " NOOO ON PUPOSE" I asked again "you did this on purpose??" So proudly he stated "YUP"

I am torn should I be angry that he did this "on pupose" or just be happy that he put three words together.

I did the responsble thing, I walked away and preteneded it never happened!!

I have spent much of Mac's life waiting for the next shoe to drop. I remember the days early in his pregnancy and continuing on after he was born just begging for a simple answer "was he going to be ok" This was never an answer that I asked anyone for, and believe me there was enough people involved in his care to ask. I think my main reason for not asking was fear of the answer. We had many case scenarios dropped on us about Mac's future, none very pleasant. I had a secret line I would repeat every time we heard something negative "at least he is here, at least he is here" I lived most if his first three years of his life in constant fear. Fear of the unknown. For the longest time everything positive that we hear was always followed with a negative. His receptive language skills are extremely high, followed by how low his expressive language skills were. When Mac started school in Sept. we had no idea what to expect. I spent too many nights to count sick with fear. Fear about what we would be told.Kindergarten was a big event in my mind. I had spent many years hoping he would catch up and always telling myself he had so much time until kindergarten. This was some marker in my mind, and when it was time I felt like we had run out of time. I had some indication early on in the year that he was doing well, but waited and wondered, waiting for that shoe to drop. I literally lost my breath when the letter came home in the school bag with a time for parent conferences. Mark and I sat on those little chairs and waited, we said nothing on the way. We have had too many of these drives, and this was no different.

Out came the test scores and examples of his work. I had to remind myself to breath.
We were told very he was doing wonderful. Of course I asked wonderful for him or wonderful for a typical kindergartner. He was doing better then a typical kindergartner. I found myself questioning her, what about this and what about that. She looked at me in the face and said "Christa he is fine, and he will be fine!!" I realized then that no one had ever said that before. I had waited six years for someone to say this.I left the meeting,( after stopping at the book fair to buy the genius a new book)and cried all the way home. He is going to be fine, he really is.

We thought that we were doing such a good job leaving notes from Santa and Rudolph. Boy were we wrong. On Christmas morning Griffin jumped out of bed to see his toys, only to quickly be distracted by this:

He was overcome, not with excitement as we had hoped. He was angry, very angry. He cried " dolph me appale!" (that's Rudolph ate my apple in Griffin talk)and "ho-ho me malk" (Santa drank my milk) He almost could not enjoy his gifts. We quickly removed the evidence hoping he would forget.

Every morning with milk and snack with an apple, he is still bitter.

FIN,let it go,it's been two weeks buddy. I have a feeling he is going to hold a grudge like his dad.

I have a confession to make, I am cheating......... On my pediatrician. I love my pedi, I really do. I think I may have the six year itch!!! When I am with him, my attention is with him. He gives us the attention that we need, but I am starting to feel like he is always trying to find time to fit us in his life. A couple of weeks ago he was too busy for us and we had to see someone else. As soon as she walked in and starting talking, and asked me what I thought, I stated to get that First date feeling. I tried to tell myself that it is because it was a new relationship. As the weeks are going by, I find myself making the boys appt. when she will be there and he will not. Today,I got caught! When I was sitting in her office and he walked by I got a pit in my stomach.

Is it even politically correct to switch doctors in the same practice. I really want to spend more time with her, but do not want to give up the relationship I have built with him. I am going to stop seeing her and work on our relationship. I do not feel right just leaving after all we have been through, but maybe there is someone out there better for me. I think I may need counseling.

Santa did a lot of researching child development books and talking to his friends about boys and weapons. He came to the conclusion that Mac can only play with Thomas the Train for so long. Due to the lack of toys for six year old boys that do not include a weapon of some sort, we needed to make a exception to the "Velardis do not play with weapons rule" Mac desperately wanted a light saber from Star Wars. Santa gave in in bought the weapon. Worried that Mac would have no idea what to do with his new toy, Santa was surprised at the noises and movements that were coming out of this sweet boys. After explaining to Mac that it was not a sword and that he needed to come up with a name for it. He immediately thought of one.

Christa and Mark Velardi would go through the same situation as the Grant’s and Orabona’s but not just once but twice! On December 3, 2003 their lives were forever changed. The pregnancy that they had waited so long for was over many weeks too soon. Their son, Mac was born very premature. He struggled for many months in the hospital. Unfortunately his struggles did not end there. He is a beautiful smart boy, but also a little boy that continues to struggle to keep up with his peers. Complications due to his Cerebral Palsy are challenging for a parent to see but the Velardi family says it does not take long for them to remember what a true miracle Mac is and how much they have the March of Dimes to thank for providing the funding and research necessary to allow them to experience their miracle every day. Four years later, the Velardi’s welcomed their second son, Griffen who was born 7 weeks early. Although they are walking a similar road with Griffin, it is much smoother because he was able to develop more in utero. Every week counts. The Velardi’s have joined in the March of Dimes mission to make sure that some day all babies get the nine months needed to grow and develop.

I think I was hooked when this 12 year old was explaining his family. One of triplets has severe cerebral palsy. He explained how they were all premature and all should have had a little bit wrong with them. But they are all perfect and that his sister is his hero because she took all the problems for the team.

attempting to write a post about everything I am grateful for. I wish it was as easy as Mac's answer "he is thankful for candy" and actually very proud of it.

To say that the last month has not been easy would be an understatement. I kind of feel like we are at a crossroads of sorts. We have had to make a lot of difficult decisions and have reached some that we did not want have to reach. The kids have been sick and although it really is just a cold or virus, I think it sends Mark and I back to a place that neither one of use is comfortable.

Although we try not to place much importance on material things, when money is tight everything becomes harder. As simple as it sounds a Starbucks coffee can make the day a little brighter. I remember my days on best rest or the early days of the boys at home in isolation, a friend would stop by with a Starbucks. Was it the taste of the coffee or the feeling that OK I am not alone. I had the chance to pay that forward today. I bought a friend, a new mom a Starbucks coffee. Why do other mothers get this, because we all get having to lug the car seat out of the car into the store. Something so simple no longer seems simple. This is how I feel lately, life know longer feels simple. It really can be the little things that make the day so much easier and we really try to focus on this as a family. What I found myself facing many times this month the big things just completely took over the little things. I was so overwhelmed by life, I could not enjoy the coffee. Although I do not want to take away the importance of the little things,I think this year I need to be thankful for the big things.

It seems like a Hallmark Card to say I am thankful for my children, that's pretty much a given.

.. This year I am thankful for all the years that I thought I would never have a child, which makes having them so much more to be thankful for.

.. This year I am thankful for almost losing them many times in the beginning, making the fact that they are hear so much more to be thankful for.

.. This year I am thankful for the years we had to fight childless to keep our marriage strong, making the fact that our marriage is now so strong much more to be thankful for.

Because all of these things have opened my heart to love others. It has given me the bravery not to just look away (or down) when someone is hurting but to hold their hand and cry with them. It has given me the understanding to bring the coffee, raise the money, or wipe the tears, often my own. It has made me say "I'll pray for you" and then actually do it. I have been crying alot of tears lately and not because I am sad but more often then not they are because I am getting it and for that I AM THANKFUL....

NOW FOR WHAT I AM TRULY TRULY THANKFUL FOR....

Catching up is hard to do

So It's been awhile. I thought I would give you an update about what's been going on.

1. GRIFFIN BROKE HIS LEG (don't ask and we won't tell)

2. Headline... Newport Confirms First Swine Flu Case

oink oink were famous!!!

3. We paid 30 dollars for a pumpkin, It was the last one in the patch!!! Did everyone else pay 30 or did we just wait so long and they knew we would have paid anything.

4.We had are second confirmed case of swine flu

5. We had 2 cases of pneumonia and 2 more er visits

6. Griffin discovered mans best invention yet (a pacifier nebulizer)

7. Operation Christmas Card went off without any issues
533 pictures and 2 hours later we have a winner.
Mark suggested that I put a disclaimer at the end of the card ** no children were harmed and no one was divorced in the taking of these photos***
I was going all Kate on everyone but it was all for the photos!!!

8. We just might have had the two cutest Halloween costumes in the bunch

October was so exciting, we can't wait until November!!!

A couple of weekends ago we were in real need of a getaway. With no money, when the opportunity came up for a hotel room, who were we to say no. Even if it was right around the corner.

Today is our Anniversary. It is hard to believe so much time has gone by, it often feels like yesterday. Things have not always been easy, and we often wondered if we could make it through. I truly believe what does not kill you will make you stronger. Our marriage, and family for that matter is based on love and friendship and spending time together not on material things. We truly feel blessed with the miracles that god has given us, and that many of the obstacles that we have crossed have made us appreciate even the little things. I truly feel God has a plan for us that even we are not even aware of. We have fought for our marriage and family and are anxious for the next chapter, whatever that may be.

P.S. I have promised Mark that someday he will be able to buy coffee everyday on the way to work. If you could see how happy this made him, you would truly understand what I mean when I say it is the little things.

Happy Anniversary Mark, I appreciate and love you more than you can even imagine.

I have been very conflicted about this whole MJ thing. Everyone knows I feel it is my job to watch and form an opinion. I was having difficulty with this one, a man died and that is sad. As a mother of little boys the accusations that surrounded him weighed heavy in my mind.

Watching the memorial today nothing else mattered. These children lost their Daddy and for that I am sad, very sad.

We are officially the March of Dimes Ambassador Family for 2009. Below is our official press release. I am scared about what this new role will require of us, but am just trying to enjoy the honor. Start watching your newspapers.

Parents Mark and Christa Velardi of Newport, RI know the significant role that March of Dimes research played in helping Mac age 5 and Griffin age 2, get this far, so they are grateful for the chance to serve as the 2009 Ambassador Family. "Prematurity hit our family twice." said Christa Velardi. Velardi explains "In 2003 Mac was born almost 13 weeks premature. He spent the first few months of his life in the NICU. He had significant respiratory issues and a brain complication that left him with Cerebral Palsy for life. In 2007 our second son Griffin was born at 33 weeks, many weeks less premature then Mac. Although we are walking a similar road with Griffin,it is a much smoother one, he had many weeks that Mac did not. Shortly after Griffin was born it became apparent to us how important each week of pregnancy is."

"The scariest moments of my life were those sitting in the NICU, not knowing if my sons would survive," said Mark. "Today, thanks to the support of the March of Dimes, they are happy and loving children who love to play tennis and baseball. Now, I'm raising money for March for Babies to help prevent other families from going through the same ordeal."

Last day of Pre-school

Three years ago I dropped off a frail little boy to the first day of pre-school. He knew about six words, did not not know how to draw a line, use the potty or his name. Today I picked up a little boy from his last day of pre-school that does not stop talking. He can write most words, his first and last name. He knows how to draw detail pictures. They were confident that the little boy I dropped off would never be in a normal class, today I picked up a little boy who will be going to a regular kindergarten with no support other then his normal therapies. He is starting to read and is developing great math skills. He told me last night that he was done with pre-school and ready for kindergarten, his teacher told me today he is ready for first grade!!! We are so proud of him and he warms our hearts daily. For the first time I can honestly say that I am anxious to see what the future holds for him. Still scared but optimistic!!! We are so proud of you Mac!!!

A little over 18 years ago my life changed forever. I was given something that I had dreamed of for so long, a baby brother. Many years separated us, we did not have the typical brother sister relationship, but my love for him was almost parent like. I remember like it was yesterday taking him to the movies and for happy meals at Mckdonalds. It is hard to believe that yesterday he graduated form high school. I see him with my boys now and it brings me back to when he was that age. His life has been filled with some trying times but he has pushed through and has become a wonderful young man. WE LOVE YOU UNCLE JUSTIN AND WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!!!

Why I love him

I love him because he is exactly the type of dad I wanted my kids to have.

I will never be able to say thank you for his drive 70 days back and forth after work so I could see his face and so he could see his boy in the hospital

I love him for allowing me to go though all necessary steps that were needed so I could get pregnant.

I love that he tried to be so strong, when deep down he was scared to death about what was yet to come

I love that either doing mid night feedings, to reading the same books over and over, he is always happy

I love him for letting me stay home with the boys, he understood what having me home meant and was willing to sacrifice.

I love him for allowing me to return to nursing school, which would mean all night time routines alone after working a 11 hour day.

I love that he would rather hang out with our kids instead of a night on the town with the guys.

I love that he loves, museums,mystic and mostly Disney as much as a child

I love that he cries when he wants to not just when he is supposed to.

I love that he has made ever effort in making this marriage work no mater what.
even though we are older I am grateful that we have GROWN UP TOGETHER

I love that he lets me sleep in.

I love that our weekend walks make me want to get up

I love when he looks at our son he sees a perfect little boy (not one with cp and other issues)

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN

Growing up we all imagine our lives, well perfect. Perfect children,perfect house, perfect husband. When finding out were pregnant, we all plan the perfect birth, homecoming for our newborns. We imagine forward in our children's lives, baseball games,dance recitals, college. What happens when things don't go as planned, we are often left with the vision of a less then perfect life. It has taken me a long time to get to this point to mourn perfection and appreciate what we have been given.

It is easy for people who have not taken the path that you have to tell you to move on. Easier said then done often. I believe that this is not possible unless you have experienced all of the stages of grief. Technically you are mourning what could have been and what you expected things to be.

When we approach someone that is going through a hard time out first instinct is wanting to remind them how much worse it could be. As a parent of a child with special needs, I hear this all the time. Believe me, as parents we thank god everyday that things are not worse. We are faced with the reality daily in school, therapy sessions and talking to other parents. There is one thing that is key to remember these other children our not ours, we have not had to mourn for them. Please allow parents to mourn what could have been. Mourn what they imagined and in their own time move on.

Next time when you feel the need to say "it could be so much worse" remember it really could be so much better. When someones mother dies, do we say it could be worse, your dad could have died also!!!!!
